The kaleidoscope of landscapes, exhilarating viewpoints and mountains rising to 3000ft make it an ideal destination for hikers.

The River Dordogne gives its name to perhaps the most romantic region of southwest France: a richly varied landscape of prehistoric cave dwellings, feudal chateaux, fortified towns and rustic farmhouses set amid fields of vibrant wildflowers and never ending birdsong. In the heart of the area is Sarlat whose medieval "old town" has a truly remarkable architectural heritage. The honey-coloured stone of the 1000 year-old buildings, churches and squares, the gas lighting and complete lack of overhead wires make it a photographer's paradise.

The Czech Republic – a small country in the heart of Europe with a distinctive culture. It is a land of gently rolling hills with bountiful lowlands and roads lined with avenues of trees and flowers.  It has medieval fishponds, twisting rivers and forests, interwoven by footpaths and trails leading to villages, with Baroque churches and orchards. It is one of the few places left in Europe where time has stood still for centuries.  Local folklore thrives here. You can taste wines introduced by the Czech King Charles 700 years ago.

It’s hard to imagine that anybody ever visits Tuscany only once. Even in a car it's great - on a bike it's sublime. We explore the region to the south of Florence in a week that includes some of the finest wine regions of Italy as well as the fabulous renaissance architecture. We start our week close to San Gimignano, one of the jewels of Tuscany, which we visit on Sunday morning. This walled city is rated as a 3 star attraction by Michelin, "worth a journey in itself", and the most striking features are the 14 remaining "tower houses". From San Gimignano we head off into Chianti. This has become perhaps the most famous wine region in Italy, and during our two-day visit to the region we'll visit top growers in Panzano, Greve in Chianti and Radda in Chianti.
