DAY 2 NAIROBI / SAMBURU

DAY 3 SAMBURU

Samburu National Reserve is situated at the southern corner of Samburu district in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. It is bordered to the south by the Uaso Nyiro River, which separates it from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve. Covering an area of 165 square km, it lies approximately 350km from Nairobi and is accessible by road and air. The river plays a central role in the parks daily life, attracting wildlife from the surrounding savannah plains.

The reserve is rich in wildlife with an abundance of rare northern specialist species such at the Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and the beisa oryx. The reserve is also popular with a minimum of 900 elephants. Elephant roam the gaunt hills which punctuate the scrubland seeking solace and contentment in the shallow waters of the river and from time to time a visitor finds herds bathing and drinking in a spectacle of unconscious pleasure. It is further from the river in the bleached grasslands scattered with umbrella Acacias that the real interest of the area lays. Large predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and buffalo are frequently seen. Also common to the area are the rare African Wild Dog sightings. With over 450 species recorded, birdlife is abundant, with a concentration of arid northern bush country birds and riverine forest species. Five species categorized as vulnerable have also been recorded in the reserve.

Stretching to the horizon and occasionally broken by mountains, Samburu is an arid and exciting land of scrub and semi-desert, sparsely populated by proud nomadic people of the same name. Scenically and faunally dramatic, large populations of crocodile can be seen at almost every bend of the river, which is fringed by giant acacias, doum palms and fig tree’s which provide welcome shade from the equatorial sun.

DAY 4 SAMBURU / FAIRMONT MOUNT KENYA SAFARI CLUB

This morning you will drive to Nanyuki to visit Spinners and Weavers. This worthy enterprise was started with the main aim of training poor, widowed and single women living in the surrounding villages of Nanyuki town in the craft of Spinning, Knitting and Weaving with the main objective of making them self reliant. Nanyuki town was targeted because it is one of the major wool producing areas in Kenya, its weather being favourable for sheep rearing and raising.

It was agreed from the beginning of the project that half of the proceeds acquired would go directly to the women under the project and the other half would be retained at the centre. Nanyuki Spinners and Weavers have been able to train over 282 women in the craft of Spinning, Knitting, Dyeing and Weaving with some venturing into private projects and earning their living for themselves & their family. Most women have been able to move from being squatters in the villages where they lived to acquiring their own pieces of land and building their homes. Most of the women have been able to educate their children through Primary schools to High schools, and some have taken their children to University level from their share of proceeds.

This morning you will be transferred to the Nanyuki airstrip for your flight to the fabulous Masai Mara, Kenya’s premier game reserve. On landing you will be met and transferred to Mara Intrepids. Located in the centre of the Masai Mara Game Reserve, on the banks of the Talek River at the confluence of the Maasai Mara’s four game-viewing areas, the camp enjoys one of the most spectacular locations in the entire Mara ecosystem. Intrepids is a short drive from the Mara River, where up to one-and-a-half million wildebeest and zebra make their perilous migration crossing every July and August.

With a maximum capacity of only 60 persons, the accent is on exclusivity and comfort. The Mara Intrepids Club sets new standards for luxury tented camps. Newly designed tents easily accommodate twin or full size four poster beds and include refinements not provided in other camps. The furnishings reflect the “Grand Safari” style of bygone days, coupled with modern amenities. The full bathroom, an integral part of each tent, includes private flush toilet, shower and electricity. The tents face the river and pathways lead from the rear to other parts of the camp, providing additional privacy.

Game viewing is provided in open four-wheel drive vehicles to enhance the experience. DAYS 7 & 8 MASAI MARA

Two full days spent in the Masai Mara, arguably Kenya’s finest game reserve. Everything about this reserve is outstanding. The wildlife is abundant and the gentle rolling grasslands ensure that animals are never out of sight. Birds, too, are prolific. Including migrants, well over 450 species have been recorded, among them, 57 species of birds of prey. The climate is gentle, rarely too hot and well-spread rainfall year round. The Masai Mara National Reserve lies about 270 kilometers from Nairobi and boasts about 1672 square km of unspoilt wilderness. The first sight of this natural wonderland is breathtaking.

Throughout the year the Masai Mara is a place of natural drama, a kaleidoscope of colour and life. Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle, Topi and Eland and many more species of plains’ game offer a rich choice of food for the dominant predators; lion, leopard and cheetah which hunt in this pristine wilderness. Here the great herds of shuffling elephants browse among the rich tree-studded grasslands with an occasional sighting of a solitary and ill-tempered rhino. In the Mara River, Hippo and Crocodile are commonly found. But for all this richness of fauna, the profusion of winged beauty and the untouched fragility of the landscape are all subordinate to the Mara’s foremost attraction, the mighty march of the wildebeest. Culminating in the most spectacular annual migration in the world, with over a million and a half wildebeest and zebra making the crossings over the grand Mara River from Tanzania into Kenya, this spectacle offers one of the most fabulous opportunities in our time.

Although July, August and September are the months when the Masai Mara plains are filled with migrating wildebeest and zebra, there is a huge amount of resident wildlife year round. Apart from the better-known species there are numerous opportunities to add some of the rare and less frequently seen animals to the visitor’s checklist. In the south western sector, you may be lucky enough to see roan antelope, a handsome creature regrettably rare countrywide. Bat-eared foxes peer from their burrows and there are thousands of Topi, an antelope not found in other major parks save Tsavo National Park. The combination of a gentle climate, scenic splendor and untold numbers of wildlife makes the Masai Mara Kenya’s most popular inland destination park.

DAY 4: Nashville, Tennessee

This morning we visit the famous Country Music Hall of Fame, which opened their brand new home in 2002. This

beautiful building is an incredible tribute to the history of Country Music. Then its all aboard the General Jackson

Showboat for a cruise down the Cumberland River, featuring a terrific lunch and fabulous entertainment! This cruise

is extra special as the General Jackson celebrates its 25th Anniversary. This evening enjoy the Grand Ole Opry

Show followed by the incredible opportunity to go back stage for a tour and meet some of the stars from tonight’s

DAY 5: Memphis, Tennessee

A casual morning including breakfast, before our departure from Nashville. We will travel southwest past Hurricane

Mills then on to Memphis, Tennessee, a city with a reputation for music. It was on Beale Street that music legend

W.C. Handy created “the Blues”, an original American art form which was a blend of mournful ballads sung by

slaves and the Dixieland jazz of New Orleans. Upon arrival there will be a city tour including a visit to the Peabody

Hotel to witness the famous Duck March. Then we visit Graceland mansion, the home of the late Elvis Presley,

DAY 6 – 8: Branson, Missouri

Our journey today is past Little Rock, enroute to Branson, where we spend the next three nights. We have included

admission to three music shows during our stay, with free time allowed for your own interests. Included is the

comedy, the Country Tonite Show, featuring old country, new country the whole family can enjoy, and finally the

Myrtle Beach is famous for being the central city on the Grand Strand, some 60 miles of white sand beach. Originally tourists knew Myrtle Beach for its golf, however, today visitors are discovering a wide range of attractions including a great selection of theatres, offering a variety of shows. Today a short driving tour to orient you to the Myrtle Beach area, followed by a visit to Brookgreen Gardens. We are pleased to include the Legends In Concert Show this vening. (B)

Today gives you some free time to do your own thing, and this evening the show at the Alabama Theatre. (B)

DAY 1: Peterborough, Ontario

From your local joining points we travel to Peterborough, in the heart of the Kawartha Lakes Region. In the afternoon, we tour the Lift Locks, with a vertical lift of 20m, these are the largest hydraulic lift locks in the World. Then onto the Canadian Canoe Museum, the exhibits explore how the canoe defines the Canadian character and spirit. Experience a waterfall, hear creation stories, or live as a voyageur during the fur trade era. Tonight we are in Peterborough.

Day 2: Ottawa, Ontario

This morning after breakfast we travel along scenic highway 7 to our Nation’s Capital, Ottawa, for a two night stay. This afternoon we enjoy a relaxing and unique view of the city of Ottawa, on an Ottawa River Cruise, including live commentary. Balance of afternoon and evening free to enjoy Ottawa sights on your own. Every Canadian should be proud of our city! (B)

Day 3: Ottawa, Ontario

Hop aboard one of Canada’s last remaining authentic steam-powered trains this morning as we make our way to Wakefield. You will be able to view the Gatineau hills ablaze with the colours of the season. Once in Wakefield you will witness the spectacular turntable show, an operation that sees the 93 ton steam engine being turned by hand for the return trip back. There is some free time for you to browse the shops or just relax and enjoy the scenery. (B)

Day 4: North Bay, Ontario

Today we cross into the province of Quebec and visit the beautiful Gatineau Park. Here we take time to tour Moorside, the estate home of three-time Prime Minister, William Lyon Mackenzie King. Later we travel northwest and cross back into Ontario at Pembroke. Then we travel the colourful northern Ontario roads to North Bay for overnight. (B)

Day 5: Home

Rise and shine to a lovely fall day, as we continue south to the famous Muskoka region. Here a Cruise aboard Muskoka Steamship Lines of Lake Muskoka, gives us a fantastic fall view of the popular get-away area for thousands of vacationers. Later we have a relaxing drive back to Southern Ontario, where we return to our joining points. (B)

Itinerary:

Days 1-3:

For those who wish to see some of the city of Cape Town we advise that you arrive a few days early as our trip leaves the city on the day of departure. There is a lot to do in the city and the regions.

Capetown, Stellenbosch & Orange River. Departing Capetown at 9:00am the first day of the trip is a short drive to Stellenbosch in the wine-growing region of South Africa. We have a chance here to sample some of the local flavours at some of the wineries.

From Stellenbosch we head north to the northern border region via the serene Cederberg mountain region. On the border with Namibia is the Orange River where we have the option of doing a four-hour canoe safari from our oasis-like campsite.

Days 4-6:

Fish River Canyon & Nauklift National Park. Our next stop is Fish River Canyon, the world’s second largest canyon and the largest in Africa. There is a spectacular viewpoint over the canyon and the sunset never fails to impress.

From the canyon we head up to Naukluft National Park. This park has one main feature, it’s sand dunes. These dunes are the highest in the world, reputed to be as high as 300 metres. The ones we will see have been measured by altimeter on our previous trips and are about 200 metres high. The day here begins before sunrise, as the best times to photograph the dunes is when the sun is low on the horizon and the shadows clearly define the contours. The other reason for the early start is that it is too hot to walk up the dunes once the sun fully rises. There is also the chance to go on a brilliant and informative early morning walk amongst the Sossusvlei/Dead Vlei sand dunes, getting up close and personal with the expertly adapted resident flora and wildlife.

Days 7-10:

Swakopmund. The next part of the journey takes us to Swakopmund. The town of Swakopmund is situated on the Atlantic Ocean and is a German colonial town in the middle of a desert. It has some wonderful old German buildings of which one of the most beautiful is the prison (it is still used as a prison).

The town itself is generally cool, as it is covered by a mist which is created by the cold air off the Atlantic mixing with the hot air of the desert.

There are lots of optional excursions on offer in Swakopmund, including venturing over the sand dunes in a beach buggy or on a quad bike, sand boarding, scenic flights & skydiving, game fishing or you can take a fantastic cultural tour of the nearby township area. The town itself proves popular on our tours as it has lots of clubs, restaurants, a casino and even an authentic German bakery.

We spend 3 nights here in dormitory or room accommodation and thus we generally dine out for most meals, with your tour leader usually distributing an allowance from your local payment for these meals.

Days 11-13:

 Otjitotongwe Cheetah Park & Etosha National Park. Just north of Swakopmund there is the Cape Cross seal colony, home to 20,000 to 100,000 (depending on the season) cape fur seals. Regardless of the season, it is always possible to get a close look at lots of seals.

From Cape Cross we head north and spend a night at Otjitotongwe Cheetah Park. What makes this farm unique from other farms in the region is that this farmer has allocated 2,000 acres of the family property as a sanctuary for cheetah. This has not really endeared them to all their neighbours who view the cheetah as vermin and a real threat to their livestock; hence the area is fenced off. Although it’s not the optimum way to view these animals (through a fence), they do have 2,000 acres and it is otherwise rare to get so close to them.

Highlights include the farmers son feeding them by hand (something that shouldn’t be missed, while he still has a hand) and sitting amongst the few that are hand reared and therefore tame. These young tame cheetahs were abandoned when they were young and consequently cannot be let to run with the other cheetah. They usually allow us 30 minutes with these animals and it is quite an experience to have cheetah walking amongst us.

North of the farm is Etosha National Park. This Park is one of Africa’s largest (roughly the size of Wales). It has some very good facilities and a very good network of roads and waterholes, which enables good game viewing. One of the more famous features of Etosha is that the campsites also have waterholes. This means that once the days game driving is over and park laws restrict us to the camping areas it is still possible to view animals. The holes are floodlit and people can sit and watch all night if they wish, the only restriction being noise. We use two areas, Okaukeujo and Namutoni, with the former being the more established so it attracts more animals. Photography is permitted and, if using fast film, good results can be achieved. Okaukeujo is famous for attracting Black Rhino, and whilst nothing is guaranteed with animals; they are frequent visitors to this waterhole. The park itself has a wide variety of animals, and they are different to the animals seen in East Africa; with different types of Zebra (it’s all in the stripes) Impala (black faced) and the Wildebeest (blue). Aside from these different types of animals there are elephant, giraffe (the park has been referred to at times as “Giraffic Park”), all of the big and small cats, antelope, teeming bird life and more.

Days 14-19:

 Okavango Delta And Chobe National Park. From Etosha, we drive along the edge of the Makgadikgadi pans to the town of Maun. We will stop in town to restock and prepare for our trip into the Okavango Delta.

The Okavango Delta is formed by the Okavango River, which flows into the desert and disappears as it fans out to form the Delta. We go into ‘the Delta’ for 3 days (2 nights) and camp in the bush, usually on the banks of one of the many fresh water channels that give life to the flora and fauna. Our method of transport is 4WD vehicles and Makoro (meaning ‘dug out canoe’ in Setswana). The Makoro’s are traditionally made of wood but as they come to the end of their serviceable life, fibreglass canoes are now replacing them. These are not quite as authentic but building the old canoes uses a whole tree and the environment is beginning to suffer. Each makoro is piloted by a ‘poler’, who helps set up camp & take guided bush walks…he/she will also always be ready for a chat and a cup of tea with you around the fire. We take all of our own equipment and food, and bring it all back out (including the rubbish), showing our understanding of the fragility of the Delta.

The Okavango Delta region is one of the world’s last remaining true wilderness areas and is home to a vast amount of animals. It is possible to take some walks to try to see them or, if you are lucky, they will wander pass close to camp. As you retire to your tent for the night, the sounds and smells of the African bush will leave an indelible mark on your senses like no other.

From the Delta we continue to Kasane and the adjoining Chobe National Park in northern Botswana. At Chobe we usually go on a 3 hour sunrise game drive in open sided 4×4’s and a 3 hour sunset boat cruise. Both the boat cruise and the game drive (and the resident 50,000+ Elephant) give us great game viewing opportunities in one of the largest parks in southern Africa.

Days 20-21:

Victoria Falls (Livingstone, Zambia). From Chobe we drive to Victoria Falls, known locally as ‘Mosi oa Tunya’, or ‘the smoke that thunders’. The falls themselves are one of the world’s natural wonders although they are neither the highest nor the widest. They do, however, create a visual spectacle as they cut a massive gorge in the earth and crash 111 metres to the river below. This gorge actually forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. There are numerous optional activities on the Zimbabwe side, the most famous being white water rafting on the Lower Zambezi. This excursion takes a full day and has 14 plus rapids, none below grade 4 (rapids are graded from 1 to 6). Please note that at certain times of the year the rafting may be restricted or even closed due to high water levels (March – May). Bungy jumping is also an option for all those who wish to throw themselves 111 metres head first off a bridge! Various scenic flights are on offer, including light fixed wing aircraft, helicopter, microlight and ultralight, all offering wonderful views of the falls. As well as these there is horse riding, elephant-back safaris, rhino and lion walks, and canoeing, not to mention a walk in the National Park to the falls themselves. Videos and still photographs are available for purchase of most activities, and are a great reminder of your adrenaline filled visit to the mighty Victoria Falls and Zambezi River.

The tour will arrive in Victoria Falls on Day 20. We would advise that you spend a few days at Victoria Falls after the tour ends. This will allow you the time to take full advantage of the activities on offer.

NB Please note that entrance (approximately 20 USD) to Mosi oa Tunya (Victoria Falls) National Park is not included in your tour price.

Itinerary

Days 1-3 Rio to Parati. No visit to Rio is complete without a trip to the world famous statue of Jesus Christ on theCorcovadomountain, which can be viewed from almost anywhere in the city. Standing 100 feet high on the mountain, the statue commands the best view in town. We advise getting there early in order to beat not only the crowds but also the haze, which covers the city about mid-morning. Keep an afternoon free to spend at the golden beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, sunbathing and watching the locals in their element. Visit the many market stalls along the waterfront areas at both beaches. From the beach, head up to Sugarloaf mountain to enjoy a fantastic sunset and a few drinks. Another recommendation is to take a Favela Tour to some of the poorer districts of Rio. It is a very unique and interesting insight into how the local people live.

With so much to do and see in Rio, we recommend you stay a couple of extra days to take as much in as you can. There can’t be many more beautiful and exciting cities in the world to start your tour. Please note that we depart Rio by morning bus to Parati on Day 1. You are strongly advised to consider booking pre tour accommodation to take advantage of all that Rio has to offer.

Heading down the striking coastline, we discover the lovely town of Parati. Parati is an old port town with cobblestone streets and quaint little shops. Here we can treat you to a fantastic day out on an old schooner sailing around the nearby islands. Spend the day relaxing on board or swimming in the warm waters and soaking up some sunshine.

Day 4 Sao Paolo. Travelling away from the coast and into the hills, we are jolted back into 21st Century life again as we arrive into the sprawling metropolis of Sao Paolo. With over 40 million inhabitants, this makes Sao Paolo the largest city in the southern hemisphere.

Days 5-6 Ihla do Mel. Our next stop is the stunning Ihla do Mel (or Honey Island), which is set a few kilometres offshore intheParanagua Bay. With its crystal waters and white sand beaches, great for both swimming or surfing, the island was declared a protected area in 1992. It is an ideal retreat to enjoy raw, natural beauty: there are no roads on the island, only a network of sandy trails with local pousadas or guesthouses dotted between the trees. So relax on the beach and enjoy the sea breezes or for the more active travellers, enjoy walks along the many hiking trails on the island that time has forgotten.

Day 7 Curitiba. Travelling by boat and bus we reach Curitiba which is the largest city in southern Brazil and home to over one and a half million inhabitants, many of whom are of German, Italian and Polish descent. Stringent urban planning, parks and cycle routes coupled with environmental concern means that residents enjoy some of the highest standards of living in Brazil. The city is also home to several universities and although this is Brazil, temperatures can fall to zero degrees in winter (June thru to August) when cold fronts push up from the south. Take a stroll around Curitiba’s parks and museums or perhaps a visit to the famous street which never sleeps: 24 Hours Street! From Curitiba we catch an overnight bus to Iguazu.

Days 8-10 Iguazu Falls. Heading south, we enter the town of Foz do Iguazu which is our base for exploring the spectacular Iguazu Falls and where we will enjoy fantastic views from both the Brazilian and Argentinean side of the falls. These are some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world, with 275 separate falls over a frontage of 2.7 kilometres.

Our day trip to the Brazilian side of the Falls will begin with an optional trip to a bird park which houses a fantastic array of not justnative birds like Toucans and Macaws, but also other birds from around the world. From here we continue on for our initial breathtaking views of the falls. There are many trails and walkways to explore, revealing more great views. Helicopter rides over the falls are possible in order to shoot the most spectacular photos of all.

For our day on the Argentinean side, we are treated to more fantastic views. One of which is the breathtaking Garganta del Diablo, or Devils Throat, where much of the river converges into one section to create an amazing sight. A walkway takes you right out to the edge of this area and you will hear the thundering noise and feel the spray well before you reach the edge. There are many other walkways to explore on the Argentinean side as well, where you can easily occupy your day. Another option on the Argentinean side is to take a boat trip right up close to some of the falls where you can really get an idea of the power and volume of the water.

Day 11 San Ignacio and the Jesuit Ruins. Crossing the border into Argentina, we head to the Jesuit Ruins of San Ignacio. Once settlements of the Guarani Indians, we take a trip to one of the best-preserved ruins. The Jesuits established many communities in Paraguay and also Northern Argentina, with great success in the 17th and 18th centuries. However, it was their success which brought about their downfall, as jealous landowners nearby could not compete with their production methods, forcing the Spanish government to expel them in 1767. However, many ruins of these communities remain, and San Ignacio is one which has been very well preserved. We catch an overnight bus from San Ignacio to Salto.

Days 12-13 Salto to Montevideo. Crossing the border into Uruguay, we travel through the rolling hills and citrus groves of western Uruguay to Salto where we can enjoy some time at the thermal springs and spas which the area is famous. Chill out and enjoy a well-deserved break with views of the verdant green landscape dotted with orange trees and backed by the River Uruguay.

We leave Salto early on the morning on Day 13, travelling on to visit Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo. We have a free afternoon in Montevideo: perhaps take a stroll around Montevideo’s Old City, famous for its bars, restaurants and pubs? Or visit the Mercado del Puerto, an old fisherman’s market transformed into an informal restaurant and enjoy being serenaded by musicians playing typical local music.

Days 14-15 Montevideo – Colonia – B enos Aires. Boarding our bus from Montevideo, we arrive at the small town of Colonia – now a World Heritage Site. Stroll the colonial streets, maybe snack on a Uruguayan chivito (a typical local sandwich with beef and many other toppings!). We then board a catamaran and head across the Rio de la Plata towards Argentina.

The tour ends in the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires is known as ‘the Paris of South America’. A lively city with many attractions it offers fantastic restaurants, shopping and nightlife. Our hotel is centrally located and close to a lot of the major attractions, as well as the main shopping streets of Florida and Santa Fe. At Plaza De Mayo you may see the Mothers of the Disappeared and nearby you can find the obelisk and bustling Recoleta. We recommend you take a city tour, which will take you to all the major sights, which are centrally located, and also to the area of La Boca, the home of Buenos Aires most notorious football team, Boca Juniors. Another must in Buenos Aires is a tango show, Buenos Aires being the home of tango and seeing one of these fantastic shows is an opportunity not to be missed.

Carnival Runs from March 4th to March 9th, 2011.  This tour would be a perfect addition to a stay in Rio for Carnival.  We would be happy to help this dream come true.

A comment from a user, if you are planning on a business trip or Vacation and want to sync your lap top to a Blackberry, do not upgrade to Microsoft’s Office, Outlook 2010, they do not sync.

I have seen some blogs that Blackberry are working on a version of their software that will  sync with Outlook 2010,  however until Microsoft and RIM, start talking, I do not recommend buying either.

My technical staff have also told me that they can not, move me back to Outlook 2007 without loss of data.

The Pacific North West at a Glance

Itinerary

Days 1, 2 Mt Rainier

Mt. Rainier is a mountaineer’s dream. Referred to as ‘Tahoma’ by the Native Americans, Mt. Rainier looms large and is ever-present in Seattle’s scenic backdrop. Do a day-hike in aptly-named Paradise Valley and walk among the mountain goats, marmots, and clouds as you ascend to Panorama Point and the base of Nisqually Glacier. Hiking amongst the high alpine scenery makes Mt. Rainier a rewarding experience for all who lace up their hiking boots.

Day 3 Mt St Helens

Since blowing her top in May 1980 Mt. St. Helens has become the most famous volcano in the USA. And would you believe that the crater is still smoking? Exploring the more remote east side, we’ll hike in her midst, gaining excellent views of the crater- just watch out for Sasquatch.

After rummaging around above ground, we next delve underground for a caving adventure that is made possible from her blast. Lava flow caused by the eruption created caves in the area. So join the expedition and get ready for some caving suitable for all levels!

Day 4 Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park offers a great mix of Pacific beaches, rainforests, mountains, and remote wilderness. Covering a large area, there are no roads that cut straight through the Olympics- making them a vast wilderness area. See the primal beauty and endless shades of green in the lush old-growth Hoh Rain Forest, which is the world’s largest temperate rain forest.

Day 5 Olympic National Park and San Juan Islands

We’re not done with the Olympics just yet- there are still some mountain vistas to be seen at Hurricane Ridge. And with over 600 miles of trails, excellent hiking can be found almost anywhere in the park.
A pleasant ferry ride takes us to a gem of the northwest, the San Juan Islands. Straddling the Washington-Canada border and with sensational seashores, wildlife, and unparalleled scenery, the San Juan Islands have a mystical quality about them.

Day 6 San Juan Islands

With several hundred islands in the chain, there are countless miles of twisting and stunning shoreline just begging to be explored. The San Juan Islands offer an incomparable sea kayaking adventure, and is consistently rated as one of the top sea kayaking destinations in the world. Maybe Shamu and his orca whale buddies (killer whales) will show up. We will be kayaking in the areas where they are frequently found playing, feeding, and migrating. Other animals with homes in the area include bald eagles and harbor seals.

Day 7 Back to Seattle

Bid farewell to Bigfoot and the great pacific northwest as we return to the Emerald City, Seattle.

6. Purchase medical & cancellation insurance to ensure peace of mind while on vacations – especially if going on an active vacation or to places that are remote.
Emergency air lifting to hospitals is expensive but often covered by insurance companies.

5. Make photocopies of your passport and leave with a family member who you will be in contact regularly with.
Just in case you lose your passport, having the passport number and the original information allows the embassy to cancel the old one and speeds up the process of reissuing another so that you are back home with out a lot of hassle.

Porter Airline have issued the following information regarding their schedule and shuttle service during the G20 summit of world leaders in Toronto.

Toronto will be the heart of a global gathering attracting world leaders and other interested parties to the city for the G20  summit meetings on June 26-27. Peak summit activity will be between June 25 and June 27.

Porter Flight Plan:- Porter is operating it’s full flight schedule. At the same time. there are likely to be some delays due to the extraordinary security measures being implemented downtown. I will be important to keep track of flight status and travel advisories on the Porter website.

Ground transportation:-Be prepared for some delays and detours when navigating the city. Movement will be highly restricted within designated downtown areas that are typically accessible – particularly beginning Friday June 25.

Please allow more time than usual for getting to and departing from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, ( the Island Airport).

Shuttle Bus:- Road closures and perimeter fencing will prevent Porter’s shuttle bus operating from it’s usual location at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel on certain days. A proactive decision has been made to suspend this complimentary service as part of security and safety plans starting  June 21, through Sunday June 27. This allows alternate plans to be made in advance. Regular shuttle service resumes Monday June 28.

Public Transit:- Union Station and public transit are to continue operating. A street car stop is conveniently – located for use one short block from the Island Airport at Bathurst st. and Queen’s Quay. You can double check the operation of the streetcars during the summit by checking the TTC online information.

Ferry:- The Airport Ferry service will operate on it’s normal schedule.

Day 1 Alba
Arrival in Alba, the mediaeval city of ‘100 towers’, where you can begin your gastronomic experience. Alba is a spa town, so you can arrive earlier and book your luxurious services to start your adventure. Dinner at hotel

Day 2 Marengo to Vergne / Barolo 12km
A taxi transfer takes you to the start of the walk in Marengo, where you follow the trail to Castiglione Faletto and La Morra, two beautiful villages that are worth while spending some time exploring. Along the route there are various wine cellars open to the public that offer our first wine tasting. Beautiful hilltop views abound. The head to Barolo, where dinner will be at a local restaurant.

Day 3 Barolo to Novello 8km
Today you pass through the idyllic Piedmont villages of Pezzole and Ciocchini, which mark the way to the village of Novello. In Barolo you will try to visit the Castello dei Marchesi Falletti and the Regional wine museum, a must for any wine connoisseur. Dinner at hotel

Day 4 Novello to Monteforte 8 km
You then descend down the orchards of Barolo to the valley and climb up again through shaded woods to the fascinating citadel of Monteforte. En route, we stop again to indulge in our second wine tasting before heading back to our hotel in town, where a gourmet dinner at our hotel awaits us.

Day 5 Cooking Lesson & optional walk 11.5 km
Transfer to Gavi in the morning to our Italian Cooking Class, where most of the ingredients are found right on the grounds. Then we enjoy the fruit of our labour at dinner. In the afternoon, we can follow to the adjacent hill, passing historic castles and return to the villa, one of the highlights of the trip, a stunningly beautiful hotel
located on a winery which produces Asti, as well as a number of other vintage wines.

Day 6 Private transfer back to Torino
En route we stop at the Designer Outlet Mall where Gucci, Armani, Roberto Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana , Loro Piana, Trussardi, Gianfranco Ferrè, Valentino, or Prada sell their clothing and accessories. British Airways Cabin Crews have begun the second of the 5 scheduled strikes,  British Airways is trying hard to satisfy the the maxium number of their passengers. 

“BA will operate more than 70 percent of its long-haul flights from its main hub at Heathrow airport this week, up from more than 60 percent last week, and more than 55 percent of its short-haul flights from Heathrow, up from more than 50 percent last week, it said.

All flights from Gatwick will operate as scheduled, the airline has said.

BA said it expects to fly more than 75 percent of its customers who already have reservations during the strike.” CNN BA

Many of BA’s loyal cabin crews are working, in spite of the Unions instructions, this is enabling BA to add flights back into the schedule.  In our opinion, the action of the cabin crew’s union has already seriously damaged British Airways  reputation as a quality first line airline, and the union should take a look at the current working rules of BA’s competitors and get in line before there are no job’s left to strike over.

British Airways Strike Updated May 21

The Strike is back on,  British Airways cabin crew union have announced that they will be going on strike on Monday, May 3 for 5 days,  other dates on their rolling strike plan will be confirmed shortly.

BA will not be shut down, but services will be limited and 30 to 50 % of flights will be cancelled or rescheduled.

We think this will be a long summer.

British Airways Strike Update May 17

A British Judge has issued an injunction to UNITE, cancelling the strike

The strike is off until further notice, British Airways hopes to have it’s schedule back to normal by the weekend.

British Airways are advising the following:- That Unite, the trade union for British Airways (BA) cabin crew, is intending to take strike action between 18 May and 9 June.

If the strike does go ahead BA will still operate MOST of their scheduled flights.

Flights to and from London City and London Gatwick, BA plans to operate ALL flights to and from London City and London Gatwick.

At Heathrow British Airways intend to operate more than 60% of the longhaul flights and more than 50% of the shorthaul flights in the first strike period and they Will add to this schedule where they can.

The Airline has trained a large number of management personnel to be qualified cabin crew, many of BA’s cabin crew crossed the picket lines and reported for duty as scheduled during the last strike period, and more are expected do so during this strike.

British Airways and the majority of it’s personnel are doing everything they can to minimize the disruptions to their passengers and to remodel the airline to succeed in the future. It is unfortunate that a few members of the BA family are determined to hold on to the privileges and  business model from the past, which evolved during the time of airline regulation and high airfares of the 50’s. 60’s and 70’s.   Most of the worlds major airlines have already re structured their business model to reflect the new world economy.

British Airways Strike Update  May 15.

British Airways have gone to the courts to try and stop Unite, the cabin Crew’s union from carrying out their strike plans,  It appears that the strike will go ahead on the 18th

British Airways is hoping to operated 60% of their planned flights during the strike period.

The Airline’s reservations and support phone lines are jammed, it is very difficult to contact BA, please call your travel agent they can help you with information and changing your flight reservations, if you booked directly or online with British Airways you will have to be patient and call the British Airways reservation centres.  If you use a battery operated phone set, make sure it is fully charged before you call BA.

The Strike Dates are: May 18 to May 22 / May 24 to May 28 / May 30 to June 03  / June 05 to June 09

WE do not recommend making travel plans with British Airways until the issues with their employees are resolved, which with the current attitudes of the company and the employees could be this fall or later.

British airways cabin crews still preparing to strike. Another strike vote is scheduled for the upcoming weeks which will determine whether or not BA’s cabin crews walk of the job.

Paragon Travel recommends whenever practical that our clients do not make any travel plans involving with British Airways until the union and the company have resolved their issues.

The cabin crew has officially announced a series of 4-5 day strikes which are scheduled for :

May 18 to May 22

May 24 to May 28

May 30 to June 03  and

June 05 to June 09

For many this is a time of waiting in the hopes that the strike vote is unsuccessful or the negotiations are.

According to the Daily Telegraph on June 11 the union has a legal mandate that allows them to strike up until June 11 but with no settlement in sight, passengers are preparing for even longer interruptions in service.

Strike dates may be changed or cancelled if BA cabin crew is able to come to an agreement or if the strike vote indicates insufficient support for the strike.

 It is a sad day for us to say that British Airways, normally one of the worlds premier airlines, has been reduced to the status of  an “if there is not an alternative” airline while the strike concerns are present.

Hosted Dancing Group Cruises

Rumba – The Rumba is the most common dance everywhere and provides interesting variety suited to a limited space.

Cha Cha – The Cha-Cha adds fun to your dancing through it’s syncopated steps, many open movements and interesting combinations.

Swing – Referred to as Jive, Rock-n-Roll or Boogie Woogie. The Swing is extremely adaptable, danced with a carefree style and a lot of circular rotation.

Samba – The Samba is Brazilian “Carnival” and embodies its lighthearted rhythm and sensuality. The Samba is unique among the Latin dances and is often a very easy dance in social dancing.

Mambo – Mambo is a fusion of Afro-Cuban beat, it’s similar in its basic structure to Salsa, with more styling and more floor movement. The exciting music and rhythmical body movements make the Mambo irresistible.

Salsa – Salsa is Spanish for “spicy and hot” representing the flavor of this popular dance. Salsa is an adaptable dance with varied interpretations and is a must for anyone wanting to go out to a latin club or travelling and dancing in Latin American.

Bolero – Bolero uses a slow Rumba rhythm played in the melodic style of a latin ballad. This dance is often said to have the rise and fall of a Slow Waltz, with a techniques similar to Rumba to create a slow, sensual, romantic dance.

Paso Doble – The dance depicting the bullfight where the male is the matador and the female represents the cape. The name comes from Spanish meaning “double step” and was a folk dance. Today it is a show dance rarely used as a social dance.

Standard/Smooth Dances

Fox Trot – The Fox Trot provides a good foundation for all dances and is sometimes called the ultimate ballroom dance. As this dance can go from simple steps and develops to become an extremely skilled dance that can be challenging at the highest levels.

Waltz – The elegant sweeping movement of the Waltz develops strong balance and control, and the ability to move around the floor. Waltz remains to this day as the most popular dance at formal occasions and functions.

Tango Tango can be one of the most beautiful of all the dances. It is characterized by synchronized and dramatic movements. The unique rhythm of the music is great training for timing and phrasing essential in becoming a good dancer.

Viennese Waltz – Viennese Waltz is the classic formal ballroom dancing. The music is a continuation that predates the previous century and its music was perfected by famous and wonderful composers. The refined image and the graceful gliding across the floor with beautiful lilts and falls make the Waltz a pleasure to watch.

Quickstep – Quickstep is the English version of a fast Fox Trot with a Charleston tempo. It is a dynamic fast dance with hopping steps set in with the smoother gliding figures.

Jive – Particularly in western Canada the term “Jive” is often used in reference to a fast social swing dance using single side steps and “quick, quick, slow, slow” rhythm.

Special Dances

Polka – This dance is an old traditional dance, consisting of small hops followed by a chasse done first to the left and then to the right. Polka is one of the main social dances very popular at functions such as wedding and other occasions.

Argentine Tango – This dance originated in Argentina where it was danced in small dance halls by the lowest classes in Buenos Aires. It was eventually adopted as a standard dance at large and evolved into a sensual and passionate dance.

Early in the morning we continue our trip south. Our first stop is in one of the bays near Loviste, on the Peljesac peninsula. After a refreshing swim we continue towards Trstenik considered to be one of the most beautiful and unspoilt traditional villages along the Croatian coast. Trstenik is set along a deep south facing bay which is lined by a pebble beach. The sea here is crystal clear, and is rich in underwater life. The town is a traditional village famous for its wine growing and was built in the late 19th Century as an important harbor for the transportation of grapes from Plejesacs isolated southern vineyards to Italy and beyond.
We overnight here and relax in the tranquil setting whilst our Captain and Crew fire up the onboard BBQ for those wanting dinner onboard the boat.

 Wednesday MLJET – KORCULA
After a night in Mljet we leave this magnificent island later in the morning and continue our cruise towards the island of Korcula stopping at Lumbarda beach and bar (also on Korcula island), where we can enjoy some afternoon beach fun on the various water activities – jet ski’s, windsurfing, and paragliding. If anyone wishes to explore Korcula Island it is possible to hire a taxi or scooter and meet the boats in Korcula town later in the afternoon.
Later in the afternoon we continue onto Korcula, the birthplace of MARCO POLO. You’ll have the opportunity to explore Korcula while we overnight in port. On this island you can find more legends, tales and monuments than anywhere else. Listen to the story of the stone walls, which were being built over two centuries ago.
After dinner you will probably work your way towards the Dos Locos bar and then you can follow the locals onto disco Gaudi inside the old town walls, which is open until sunrise. Just don’t miss the boat the next morning! 

  Thursday KORCULA – MAKARSKA
The next morning we will sail back up the Dalmatian coast up to the Makarska Riviera. We spend the afternoon swimming at one of the beautiful bays before arriving into Makarska later in the afternoon. Makarska is the most attractive coastline on the Dalmatian coast nestled under the massive peaks of the Biokovo mountain range with Mt Jure the highest seaside peak on the Mediterranean. Stroll along the ancient streets and explore numerous churches and other architectural and cultural sights that take your interest.
For anyone needing to burn off some extra calories there is a guided excursion to the top of Biokovo Mountains where you can do some hiking, taking in some amazing views and the sunset from the top.
If you are looking at nightlife options there is the cocktail bar Marineta and for late night takers there is the infamous club “Deep” a natural cave next to the sea which booms into the wee hours.

We use Makarska as a great base for starting the land options for the day which include an optional day trip through to Mostar in Bosnia. This option includes transport from Makarska and back to Split where you can meet back up on the final night (packed lunch included).
The boats will make there way back to Split stopping for a swim break and lunch at one of the pretty coastal beaches. There is an optional river rafting activity after lunch for anyone who wishes to get some action in for the day. Again you will be dropped back in Split later in the afternoon where you will rejoin the boats.
For those staying with the boats we start our journey back to Split and arrive during the late afternoon. Enjoy the view of the Split Riviera as we motor into port.
Split is a monumental city under UNESCO protection that belongs not only to Croatians, but also to you, as it is a part of the world heritage. Here we find an abundance of Roman architecture – of special interest is the Diocletian palace.

 The Croatian Island experience is best done with a classic wooden cruising vessel. This allows you the access to all the hidden coves, small ports and beautiful locations that this region has to offer. These boats also allow us more personalized service and a chance for spontaneous stops.  You will really get to know your fellow travelers and helpful crew during your week in the Adriatic! Our Ensuite boat is great if you want the extra privacy and convenience of a toilet and shower in your cabin. The Ensuite boats are typically a little bigger than our Standard boats in size and because of this take an average of 30-40 travelers.
  

The cabins are based on twin share and are mostly bunk beds. The ensuite cabins are generally smaller with plenty space enough to shower and change comfortably. All bedding is provided as well as a cabin towel for personal use. We recommend you bring a beach towel for use on the decks or beaches. The cabins are mainly located above deck, which are sometimes over two levels (main deck & top deck). Our below deck cabins are located in the hull of the boat.

In Port NcNeill we meet at the front desk of the Black Bear Resort Hotel at 7:00pm.  The hotel is located at 1812 Campbell Way near the bottom of the hill, on the left side of the street as you enter town – you can’t miss it.  If you’re looking for accommodations we recommend the Black Bear because of it’s convenience and reasonable rates, and you can leave your car and belongings there for the week.  Book it with Paragon Travel and save 10% on your hotel.

The purpose of this informal ‘meet and greet’ is to discuss the trip, possible paddling routes, weather forecast, and any last minute questions that arise.  We also hand out dry bags and show you how to pack and seal them up for the trip.  When you return to your hotel room you can leisurely pack your clothing and personal supplies for the adventure ahead.  If you are unable to attend this meeting please let us know ahead of time so we can make alternate arrangements for you.

We meet in front of the Black Bear Resort in Port McNeill at 8:00am.  If you’re staying at another local hotel or B&B we’ll gladly pick you up in the Steller van.  We’ll drive in the van approximately 30 minutes to historic Telegraph Cove where we load the kayaks, gear, and equipment on to the water taxi.  Please DO NOT be late or we’ll miss the boat!

Our water taxi ride takes about two hours and delivers us to Insect Island, deep in the heart of the islands making up the northern region of the Broughton Archipelago Provincial Marine Park.  Keep a sharp lookout because we regularly spot orcas, humpbacks, and porpoises from the water taxi!  Upon arrival we’ll unpack, set up camp, and have a wonderful gourmet lunch on the beach.  After lunch your guides will provide you with basic paddling instructions before setting off for a short afternoon paddle.
Back at camp for the evening, your only responsibility is to relax and enjoy the beach, the forest, and the beautiful sunset.  Insect Island is the site of an ancient First Nations village site known as Kukwapa, where a variety of resources were processed including clams, fish, cedar and spruce, and land mammals.  The village was used by various First Nations groups over time, including the Kwiksootainuk, Tsawatainuk and Gwawaenuk.  This is where you’ll begin to learn about life on the northwest coast thousands of years before Europeans arrived.
While you explore the forest and beach, or socialize around the camp, your guides will be busy preparing appetizers and a delicious gourmet dinner for your enjoyment.  As the evening winds down, we’ll enjoy dessert around the campfire, share stories, and talk about the next day’s adventure.

Day 2 – 5
Over the next four days, we’ll paddle a labyrinth of islands that is one of the most amazing kayaking experiences on the coast of British Columbia.  During the course of our explorations, we’ll paddle by several of the ancient Kwakwaka’wakw village sites in the region.  One such site is the world renowned village of Mimkwamlis on Village Island.  At Village Island we’ll explore the remains of this 4000 – 5000 year old village first photographed by Edward Curtis at the turn of the century.  Mimkwamlis is also known by non-native people as the “Village of the Last Potlatch” and you’ll find out why this is a misnomer.  You will also see the remains of Euroamerican settlement, such as the school and tuberculosis clinic built at the turn of the century.  

We also visit Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound, which are home to the largest concentration of Orca whales in North America during the summer months.  The Orca are organized into closely bonded family groups of mothers and their offspring forming ‘matrilines’, extended families called ‘pods’ formed from families of genetically close relatives, and even larger groupings of families called ‘clans’ that share acoustic traditions.  There are 34 known matrilines totaling a few more than 200 members in what is known as the ‘the northern resident community’.

Adjacent to Blackfish Sound we visit Yukusam (Hanson) Island which is home to over 5,000 culturally modified trees. If time permits, we’ll hike through the rainforest to an interpretive centre known as the ‘Earth Embassy’ where you’ll learn about the sustainable traditional practices used by the Kwakwaka’wakw in harvesting forest resources such as lumber for houses and canoes, bark for clothing and baskets, and plant parts for food and medicines.  These traditional practices are but one example of the richness and complexity of northwest coast culture in the region.  Along the way you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Blackfish Sound, Johnstone Strait, and the Coastal Mountain Range.

As we paddle through the Broughton’s toward Johnstone Strait we’ll also keep a sharp lookout for the humpback whales that frequent the area in increasing numbers over the last few years.  Johnstone Strait will take your breath away with its views of the glacier-carved mountains of Vancouver Island, its brilliant sunsets, and its magical evening displays of bioluminescence.

Day 6
On the final day of our trip we’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast and a few more hours of paddling as we head back to civilization.  Paddling north along the coast of Vancouver Island we often spot black bears foraging in the intertidal zone, so keep your eyes open!
We reach historic Telegraph Cove near midday and have plenty of time to enjoy lunch together at the Killer Whale Café (not included in the tour) before heading back to Port McNeill.  We highly recommend that you do not make travel plans for this evening because, on rare occasions, wind in Johnstone Strait can delay our return.

Please note :
Our tours require about six hours of moderate exercise each day while the expeditions require six to eight hours of exercise, and some previous experience paddling or camping is useful but not necessary.

We recommend that you be in good physical condition if you want to participate in an expedition due to the extra energy necessary for loading and unloading your boat several times.  None of our trips require you to be a seasoned athlete however.  If you have special medical concerns you can always contact your doctor for advice. Our guides are certified in Advanced Wilderness First Aid and CPR.

Your guides will be preparing all the delicious meals using fresh organic fruits, vegetables, dairy products, seafood, and baked goods to create wonderful gourmet dishes, hors d’oeuvres, and snacks.  We also serve organic fair trade coffee, hot chocolate, fruit juices and assorted teas with every meal.  Good food and nutrition is as important to our trips as charts and compasses and we’re certain that you’ll be delighted with our food! We are able to accommodate special diets such as vegetarian, vegan, non-seafood, and wheat-free and dairy-free diets.  There may be some things that we cannot provide if you are on a strict menu plan however.  When this is the case our guests often bring some of their own snacks, etc.  Feel free to call us and let us know if you have special dietary concerns and we’ll work out a special menu just for you.
