Ensemble Experience
HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM
Tour Name: Museums, Markets and Temples |
|
|
|
Spend a delightful day
exploring vibrant, bustling Ho Chi Minh City, beginning with a visit
to the fascinating National History Museum. Built by the French in
1927, it documents the evolution of Vietnams many cultures, from
the Bronze Age Dong Son civilization to the southern Chinese Funan
people, the Cham and the Khmer societies. Among the exhibits are
stone and bronze relics, bronze drums, enigmatic Cham art and
ceramics, and a display of the traditional costumes of ethnic
minorities. Your next stop is the Reunification Palace. Today it is
a museum with everything left much as it was on that fateful day,
April 30, 1975, when communist tanks crashed through the palaces
wrought iron gates and overthrew the South Vietnamese government.
The basement houses the combat strategy room, the communications and
map rooms and the presidential bomb shelter. Above, on the ground
floor, is the banquet hall and the state chamber where the
government surrender took place as well as the cabinet room, which
had been used for daily military briefings during the period leading
up to the governments fall. On your way to a traditional Vietnamese
lunch enjoy a short drive through the city past the 19th century
Notre Dame Cathedral, built with material imported from France, and
the attractive colonial-style Post Office. After lunch its off to
the bustling Binh Tay wholesale market crowded with locals. Here you
will have some free time to shop and browse through the stalls
before continuing on to Thien Hau Pagoda dedicated to the Goddess
Protector of Sailors. Chinese Buddhists built this lovely temple at
the end of the 18th century as a thank you to the goddess for having
safely delivered them on these shores after a perilous sea journey
from China. Then sit back and relax during the drive back to the
ship.
