Discover exhilarating, dynamic Shanghai, awash in amazing modern
architecture yet enfolding pockets of heritage like the exquisite Yu
Yuan, a stunning Ming Mandarins garden and the world-famous Bund,
the broad century-old boulevard that hugs the curving shoreline of
the Huangpu River. Your tour of Shanghai begins with a brief photo
stop at the famous Bund, the commercial center of old Shanghai. Then
youll drive to another section of the city to the splendid Yu Yuan.
The Chinese elite treasured their carefully planned gardens where
they could relax and contemplate ordered nature. The 400 year-old Yu
Yuan, a superb private preserve built in the Ming architectural
style is a perfect example. Reminiscent of gardens in Suzhou, this
mandarins garden features more than 30 halls and pavilions and is
divided into six parts, each separated by a white brick wall; the
top of which forms an undulating gray dragon. Savor the serene and
contemplative atmosphere as you wander through them. After your
visit to the gardens you will drive to the Chao Yang residential
area, the first of its kind in Shanghai built after the liberation
in 1949. Enjoy a very special experience as a local family welcomes
you into their home. After a tour of the home you can enjoy a
dumpling lunch. Then you will have a quick tour of the area before
returning to the ship.
