Travel Tips for the Single Woman Traveling Solo

Deciding to travel solo was no doubt daunting, but have no fear you made the right choice.  Solo travel can be one of the most exhilarating experiences of your life.  There is no point in waiting for your friends to try and get vacation time, and savings at the same time as yourself.  Just trying to agree on destinations and itineraries with a group can be hard enough.  So you have chosen to go it alone…you may be feeling some apprehension; but allow me to help with some of these common sense travel tips.

1. Research your destination
and the safety thereof.  Be sure to book all of your hotels in advance, and be sure that the hotel that you have chosen is in a good neighbourhood.

2. Check that your travel documents are in good order.  It is also a good idea to keep extra copies handy.  You can store copies in your email account that can be accessed from anywhere.

3. Pack light
as you will be the one carrying your luggage.  There is a reason they call it ‘lug’gage.  It is a good idea to keep your money in a secure and hidden waist pouch.  I have even heard of people keeping a $20 in their shoe in case the pick pockets succeed.

4. Dress conservatively.
Some cultures require this, and even if you do not it is fair, admittance can be denied to some locations due to dress codes not being adhered to.  Dressing cautiously can also prevent unwanted attention.

5. Leave the jewellery at home!
Advertising your wealth or goods is not a good plan.  Even expensive looking jewellery should be left behind, a thief does not know it is a fake until he gets ahold of it, and that is what you are trying to avoid.

6. Sensible walking shoes
are a must.  You will most likely be doing a lot of walking and sore feet can truly ruin an otherwise perfect excursion.  Keep the stilettos for special nights out when you will not be walking.

7. Do not travel alone at night.
This is so common sense that it needs no explanation.

8. Trust your gut.
Your intuition is a gift that you should not ignore.  It is also a good idea to be mindful of how much personal information you are giving out about yourself.  There is no need to make it common knowledge that you are a single woman traveling alone.  Keep your plans to yourself, you are not being rude; but rather careful.  It is wise to choose seats next to women, and look to women for advice and directions if you need help.

9. Think twice before asking a stranger to take your picture.
Handing a stranger your valuable camera is a big risk, it would be easy to run off with it.  Along the same lines you should never take food or drinks from strangers either.  But I am sure that your mother has taught you that, it is good advice at home too!

10. Hook up with other travelers or groups.
There is safety in numbers and a joy in sharing an experience.  Many places offer tour groups and guides, and this can enhance the experience for you and the others.

Do not become paranoid!  Common Sense will guide you safely.
