On our “sea days” Prof. Scharper, will be presenting his lecture course :
“Faith in Film: Catholicism and Classic Hollywood Cinema”
In this course, University of Toronto Prof. Stephen Bede Scharper explores not only depictions of Catholics, but also Catholic themes, values and symbols in a variety of classic Hollywood films. Among these are: Alfred Hitchcok’s I Confess (1953), John Ford’s The Quiet Man (1952), Frank Capra’s Meet John Doe (1941), Elia Kazan’s On The Waterfront (1954), and Michael Anderson’s The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968).
Stephen Scharper is a renowned author, professor and scholar of religious values ethics and ecology. Embodying the values for “public scholarship” and a deep commitment to teaching beyond the classroom. Dr. Scharper currently serves as a Faith and Ethics columnist for The Toronto Star, Canada’s largest newspaper, and has appeared as a commentator on CTV News, VISION-TV, CityPulse 24, and CBC’s Counterspin as well as CBC
Radio’s “Tapestry” and Sounds Like Canada”. Dr. Scharper has taught at McGill University, Prescott College, the University of Waterloo, and the Univerisity of Vermont. At the University of Notre Dame, he held the John A. O’Brien Chair in Ethics as a Visiting Professor. He is past president of the Religious Education Association of the US. and Canada, is profiled in Who’s Who in Religion and Who’s Who in Canada.
In Addition to his academic courses, Dr. Scharper has taught numerous film courses in the University of Toronto’s Later Life Learning Program – including Green Screens, Nature and Noir: Shades of Green on the Dark Side of the Screen, and most recently, Dress and Identity in Classic Hollywood Films. Providing a unique blend of the scholarly and the accessible in both his teaching and public speaking, Dr. Scharper has spoken to and inspired a wide range of audiences and remains a much sought after- Lecturer.
