Cruise ship Terminal and  Hollywood International Airport

Location, Tranfers, Ideas

From Ft. Lauderdale Port Everglades Crusie port and Hollywood international airport

The Port Everglades / Ft. Lauderdale Cruise port, is located within sight of the Ft. Lauderdale / Hollywood International airport,  and about  40 to 60 minutes from Miami International Airport.

How close is the port? You can see it from the terminal

Cab fare from Ft. Lauderdale Airport to to the cruise ship terminals is between $11 and $15, although in occasional instances,  (when there are a lot of ships in port and homeland security has raised the security level and when they are checking every thing coming into the port) the traffic can be backed up and taxi costs will increase due to the delays.  I have once experienced a delay so long that the taxis were taking over an hour to make the 10 minute drive, and the meters claimed to $50 plus.

Cruise ship transfers are usually $15 each way per person.

Nick’s recommendation is to take a taxi, it’s cheaper especially if split 2 or 3 ways, faster, you do not have to wait while the other 40  or so guests are loaded and unloaded and then line up with them to find their bags and check in.

If you are arriving or departing from the Miami Airport, allow an extra hour or so for the transfers. Transfers options are, Cruise line transfer ( a good value for the distance)  Take taxi ( a long and expensive ride),  take a shuttle van transfer ( $22) or my favourite rent a car for the day, pick it up at the car rental companies at Miami and drop it off  at their Ft. Lauderdale offices.

A rental car for the day with taxes will cost from $32.50 to $80, depending on when you booked it, size and availability of rental cars. My recommendation is if the price is right rent a car from Thrifty, they have a very convenient drop off location at the entrance to the Ft. Lauderdale cruise port, and will take you to or from your cruise ship in their courtesy van.

Nick does not recommend using Budget, the Budget staff in Miami may ( they maybe have been misinformed in his experience)  tell you that when you take the car to the Ft. Lauderdale Airport for drop off that they will take you to the Cruise Ship terminal, they  won’t and you will have to pay for a taxi. Beware of Budget Rent a Car.

If you have time on before your ship sails from Ft. Lauderdale, instead of driving directly from the Miami Airport Ft. Lauderdale along the expressway, one of the scenic drives.

Drive A,  2 to 3 hours extra.  Drive from the Miami Airport (112 to I95 to I395,  to port of Miami, MacArthur Causeway)  to South beach, following the signs to Miami Beach on the Express way, do not take the city roads ( they pass through the bits of Miami that the tourist board does not want you to see), have a look at the ships that are in Port from the side of the road as you drive on the Mac Arthur causeway to South Beach, there is a good spot to stop and take pictures as you go over the bridge besides the Chalk Air Terminal building.   On the North side of the causeway glance over at the houses on the islands, some of them are rather nice.

When you reach South Beach, drive to the end of the road and turn left ( north), take a drive on Ocean Drive and back down Collins, before parking. If you have time stop for lunch. South beach is famous for it’s renovated Art Deco buildings, and life style, enjoy it for a while.

Next follow 1A north from South Beach, through Miami Beach, Hollywood and on to Ft. Lauderdale, follow signs to Ft. Lauderdale Hollywood Airport and your car rental company map to the drop of location, if you rented a Thrifty Renta Car, there is a rental/drop off location close to the Port Everglades entrance.

Arrive early and see the ships, Port Everglades is home port to many cruise ships, including Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, Princess Cruises, Costa, Holland America, some Carnival Cruises Ships and the occasional visiting  navy war ship.
